Can an Afro grow natural black hair?

I need a black women advice. I want to know if an afro (protective style) can grow my hair long. I want to grow my hair past mid back. Do I need braid, weaves, wigs ....to grow my hair. Can an Afro do the job? Would my hair grow faster in cornrows. Or it does not matter as long as it being taken care of? Thanks.Can an Afro grow natural black hair?
