What is the least damaging hair color for changing natural black hair to permanent brown or a reddish shade?

I'm sure this isn't the answer you are looking for as far as cost-wise goes, but a salon if given this question will find a perfect hair color for you that is not as damaging as store bought brands, but anytime you go lighter, expect some damage.
