How do you dye natural black hair to a lighter colour, such as brown?

I have natural black hair, and I would like to dye it red brown! I'm going to do it at home with a dying pack so if it's gross, it'll come out after like a month! Do i have to buy the dye a few shades lighter than what i want? Or will it show up at all?How do you dye natural black hair to a lighter colour, such as brown?
actually that will not work, you cant dye your hair lighter only darker, so you will need to go to sally beauty supply or somewhere like that and get low lights, its a bleach but will not be blonde and you can pick out a brown/red color.How do you dye natural black hair to a lighter colour, such as brown?
i think you should just go to a shop to get it professionally done .. but if not i think you should get it 3 shades lighter because black will always make everything darker than what it really is ..
